On Sunday May 4th, several of the ColoRODans participated in the Great Machine Event hosted by The Rocky Mountain Nova Club. Jim Arnold, Terry Campbell, Mike Wells, Harold Aldridge, Ted McArthur, Jim Miller, and Bob Bennett from the club along with Erv Menebroker (a former member of the ColoRODans) arrived at the clubhouse by 6:30 so Jim Arnold and Mike Wells could be there early so they could help with the judging. We jumped into the cars and headed out. We met Jim Arnold on the way through Boulder. Being that we were on the road that early traffic was light, so once we hit highway 93 they opened up and left me in the dust. Ted followed me, so he got to save a little on gas. From my perspective it was a nice drive. The '53 handeld well for it's age. With the 12volt battery in the trunk with an accessory port so I could plug in a radio.
Once there at Heritage Square, we had to wait a bit. We were early. Mike and Jim got to go in early 'cuz they were judging. We were let in at 8 when the gates opened. Since we were early in we got parked by the tressell at the front entrance. Popped the hood, wiped down the

The weather was very cooperative durring the morning, but as the day went on, the clouds moved in and it became darker. I wasn't sure if it was going to rain or just imply that it may. With the quality wiper system in the car, it's original vacumm powered, there would be no way I could drive. But it didn't rain, Mike wasn't looking forward to rain either with his wipers. So we were lucky. 3pm arrived, award time. First up, Class A - Original or Restored 1900 to 1968. This was my class. Nothing. Zip, zero, nada, 0, no joy. (I think it has to do with the restored, who can compete with new and shiney???) But then they announced that Mike Wells (early street rod), Jim Arnold (late street rod), and Erv Menebroker, won some awards. They went up and recieved their plauqes. Way to go guys. Representing the ColoRODans! Whew! After all that it was time to go.
The first ones out waited in the parking lot for the rest of us. Once again we were on the road. And once again I was left in the dust. Of course it doesn't help to hit every single light red on the way. Ted took a different way, he had some stuff to do. Bob was in front then he was gone. I did catch a glimps of Jim Arnold's car, it's bright orange and can be seen for quite a ways. I had a nice drive home. I didn't win any awards but it was a perfect day for the event and a great day to get out the car and drive. Next stop, the Sonic Cruise.
I would like to issue a big thanks from The ColoRODans to The Rocky Mountain Nova Club for putting on a nice event in a really cool place. See you next year.
